Action for Healthy Kids Parents' Survey Reveals Knowledge Gap

A new national survey of parents of school-aged children found a significant gap between what parents believe is happening and what is actually happening in terms of nutrition and physical activity in America's schools.

The survey, conducted by Action for Healthy Kids and announced at the Healthy Schools Summit 2005, found a “disconnect” between parents' priorities and perceptions and what actually happens at school occurs in the area of physical activity. Seventy-seven percent of parents support requiring daily physical education for all children, and 62% rate their child's school as “excellent” or “good” on “making daily physical education available for all students.” However, in reality only 5.8 to 8.0% of schools nationally (depending on grade level) provide students with daily physical education.

While Progress Made, Accountability Needed

It took until after 2 a.m. Monday, but the Education Working Group finally finished its work.  The Senate worked very hard to have health and physical education included in the final bill during these complicated negotiations.  For an uncomprehendable reason, the House conferees ignored the House provisions that had overwhelmingly passed the House floor by a vote of 99-34 and advocated for no change in health and physical education policy.  We couldn’t be sadder to report that the Senate finally had to give in to the House in order to move the Omnibus Education bill along.
